As a member of the American Airlines in-house legal team, the Director, Senior Environmental Attorney will provide legal advice to all levels of company management to comply with environmental issues facing a large, international company, including environmental regulatory compliance (soil, water, and air), environmental litigation, and government environmental enforcement matters.
What you’ll do

  • Function as the company’s environmental compliance specialist, including representing American in dealings with third parties; negotiating permits, consent decrees, and similar agreements; reviewing and negotiating environmental provisions of property lease agreements; ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and company policies; anticipating and addressing environmental exposures; coordinating with outside counsel; and staying current with developments, trends, and practices
  • Provide practical, compliant, and strategic legal advice and counsel to management at all levels
  • Conduct third-party due diligence
  • Conduct compliance risk assessments to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and company policies
  • Develop and implement remediation plans based on internal and external audits, investigations, and reviews
  • Develop and deliver in-person, specialized training as needed
  • Develop and update environmental policies and processes
  • Perform other duties as required, which may include working on other projects and investigations supporting the company’s compliance program

Drives continuous improvement of the workforce analytics toolkit – crew staffing models, reserve forecast, training optimization engine, training assignment modeling, and model validation to ensure planning integrity and operational relevance.
  • Leads operational and financial analysis of business variables including, but not limited to, flying schedules, labor contract provisions, regulatory provisions, and technology
  • Engages actively with Crew Scheduling leadership and floor supervisors in staffing plan execution and partners with Crew Schedule Planning team in understanding our crew trip economics
  • Partners with Training leadership for both pilots and flight attendants to ensure staffing plan readiness at all times
  • Partners with Flight and Flight Service groups on staffing variables impacting our crew members and facilitates effective communication of changes
  • Partners with Network and Schedule planning teams to maximize crew supportability of airline flying plans while maintaining planned operational reliability profile and crew member satisfaction levels
  • Partners with Division Finance team to develop crew pay hour forecasts that impact ~$4.0B in payroll costs, during both annual and monthly processes
  • Partners with Financial Planning & Analysis team in securing timely approval for hiring proposals and other resource requests

  • Provides practical, compliant, and strategic legal support and counsel to Company leaders to ensure compliance with employment and labor laws
  • Functions as a labor and employment subject matter expert, including staying current in all applicable legal areas such as Railway Labor Act, Title VII, ADA, FMLA and state and local employment laws, including state and local wage and hour laws
  • Provides practical, compliant, and strategic legal advice and counsel to Labor Relations, People Business Partners, and Operations leadership on a full range of Railway Labor Act issues, including on administration of multiple collective bargaining agreements
  • Works closely with Labor Relations, People Business Partners, and Operations leadership on issues related to contract interpretation, grievances and arbitrations, and performance management, and assists the business with developing legally compliant, yet practical solutions to employment-related issues
  • Supports labor agreement negotiations
  • Serves as lead counsel in labor arbitrations
  • Strategically and in a cost-effective manner, manages and partners with outside counsel in litigation matters

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Demonstrates the highest level of ethics and integrity
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school, excellent academic record, and active member in good standing in at least one State bar
  • At least five (5) years of successful experience practicing labor and/or employment law, preferably at a national law firm and/or in-house

  • Establishes the hub’s strategy and objectives ahead of irregular operations and ensures activities are carried out in accordance with the operating plan
