  • Role Specific DetailsThis is a regional role that is responsible for the operational oversight of 12 stations in the Mid-Continental US. The Director will lead a team of 12 station manager/leaders to deliver on Alaska Airlines core safety, operational, and guest satisfaction metrics. The Director will need to reside within the region.

    Role Summary

    The Director Station Operations sets the long-term strategy for driving a safe, reliable operation while maintaining the highest standards in customer service for Alaska Airlines (AS). As a people leader, this role establishes strategic goals and direction for a team of operational leaders to ensure the station(s) responsible for meet performance objectives and compliance guidelines, and regularly evaluate facility plans to ensure optimum efficiency, productivity, and financial performance.

    Key Duties

    • Establish strategic goals and direction for team of station leaders.
    • Set long-term strategy for operational plans to ensure the station meets performance objectives and compliance guidelines.
    • Evaluate facility plans regularly to ensure optimum efficiency, productivity, and financial performance of station(s) of responsibility.
    • Shape culture of the team through action, presence, and reinforcement of behaviors, including open and honest, clear, two-way communication with front line and field supervisory staff.
    • Oversee procedures for new station operations, coordinate with other departments to provide assistance and ensure all start-up requirements are met.
    • Influence between all stations within designated region and provide strategic recommendations to other appropriate stations and regions to ensure adequate support services are provided.
    • Develop budget for region and review regularly to ensure financial objectives and all guidelines are met.
    • Manage alliance, supplier, and CPA (capacity purchase agreement) relationships.
    • Establish strong, collaborative relationships with union leadership.
    • Develop people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on fostering strategic and systems thinking, development of talent, and succession planning across teams and disciplines.
    • Facilitate diversity, succession planning, and career progression through the identification of career development opportunities via developmental assignments and formal/informal training.

    Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

    Required

    • A minimum of 8 years of airline operational experience.
    • A minimum of 5 years of leadership experience with 2 years of those years directly leading people.
    • A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree or an additional 2 years of experience in lieu of this degree.
    • Strong track record effectively managing teams, with experience developing and mentoring employees through engagement.
    • Working knowledge of fiscal control systems, staffing processes, safety, and security compliance.
    • Sound, strategic thinker with a track record of demonstrating good judgement, strong business acumen, and executing plans with a sense of urgency and a mind for safety.
    • Skilled at making and defending tough decisions, while demonstrating care and concern for the opinions of others, both inside and outside the organization.
    • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal).
    • Proactive, enthusiastic, creative, and willing to try new approaches.
    • Ability and willingness to travel extensively (70-80%).
    • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
    • Minimum age of 18.
    • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

As a people leader, this role establishes strategic goals and direction for a team of leaders to uphold cabin safety standards and ensure cabin operation standards are complying with all regulatory requirements and accountable to Alaska Airlines Chief Compliance Offer for all compliance-related matters.

    Key Duties

    • Liaises between the inflight and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for all security and safety issues, including training content, self-disclosures, government affairs, and cabin safety.
    • Ensures flight attendant training and proficiency complies with the Flight Attendant Training Manual, company and regulatory requirements, and the curricula are Air Transportation Oversight System (ATOS) compliant.
    • Establish strategic goals and direction for the inflight management team and 24 hour on-call support as the face of inflight safety and compliance.
    • Develop people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on fostering strategic and systems thinking, development of talent, and succession planning across teams and disciplines.
    • Collaborates with Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) safety and health to address all issues that are brought forward and advocate for inflight interests.
    • Develops and maintains policies and procedures that ensure and enable compliance by identifying, eliminating, or mitigating risk(s) to an acceptable level, while being mindful of operational impact.
    • Develops and implement continuous improvement program with the goal to improve cabin safety, increase safety awareness, and enhance the operations.
    • Leads the inflight Employee Injury Review Board and collaborates with the safety department to address inflight occupational safety issues.
    • Analyzes and reports all trends, safety concerns, and compliance issues to senior inflight leadership.
    • Oversees and supports the execution of the Safety Management System (SMS) within the inflight division.
    • Accountable for the accuracy and excellence of the inflight quality assurance and compliance audit program.

    Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

    Required

    • 8 years of experience in relevant aviation safety and/or compliance.
    • 5 years of leadership experience, with at least 2 of those years directly leading people.
    • Bachelor’s degree, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.
    • Outstanding communication (e.g., verbal, written, and listening) and presentation skills, with a demonstrated commitment to clear and transparent communication.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand the root causes of issues and to resolve in a thorough manner.
    • Experience with labor unions.
    • Flight attendant qualified, or able to successfully complete 5 weeks of flight attendant training.
    • Knowledge of applicable FAA regulations.
    • Minimum age of 21.
