As the Director of Emerging Technologies, you will play a critical role in identifying and delivering new technologies to benefit Air Canada’s many business functions. The successful candidate will provide thought leadership within the technology innovation space. This is a highly visible role where you will be collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
The Successful candidate will:
  • Investigate the use of emerging technologies and demonstrate the impact on business strategy by delivering innovation outcomes through rapid project execution demonstrating feasibility of achieving key business strategic goals.
  • Evangelize innovation throughout the organization.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders and leverage cross-functional teams to identify new opportunities to evaluate, build, test, and iterate capabilities with innovative technology.
  • Identify, develop, influence the implementation and operationalization of emerging technologies that will enhance customer experience, deliver operational efficiencies, and enable next generation product offerings.
  • Develop an innovation framework to track and report on related activities.
  • Manage the innovation demand intake process.
  • Incorporate and balance cyber security principles and risks
  • Validate the value received from innovation efforts vs what was expected.
  • Connect technologies to business problems and present solutions in a way that both technical and non-technical stakeholders understand.
  • Lead and grow the emerging technologies team via direct reports and as a virtual team.
  • Manage technology vendor relationships with companies that provide services, equipment, and resources.
  • Build and present business cases to demonstrate the value of technology adoption.
  • Facilitate the progression of innovation efforts from proof of value into broad scale deployment.
  • Ensure that benefits tracking is in place to confirm that the proposed business value was delivered

Qualifications

  • Airline/Aviation or logistics experience is an asset.
  • At least 10 years of experience in designing, building, and operating technology platforms

Key Functions & Accountability
  • Accountable for the strategic direction for a range of dispute resolution methods under Bill C-65 and the Canada Labour Code, including negotiated resolution, conciliation, and/or investigation of alleged Occurrences of Harassment and Violence (including sexual harassment) in the Workplace. 
  • Provide leadership and direction to a team of professionals conducting investigations in Canada promoting effective employer and employee relations, in an environment where labour and employment law, regulations and policy are continually evolving
  • Develop a long-term vision and strategy for the Canadian HRHO to address new Canadian legislation requirements.
  • As a domain expert, continually assess policies and procedures, and identify opportunities for policy development or change in regulation procedures. 
  • Act as a key resource on evidentiary matters, legal standards, burden of proof, and on the rights and responsibilities for issues concerning harassment or violence.
  • Develop and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with government agencies and FETCO to facilitate the exchange of information and represent Air Canada during employer meetings.
  • Lead best practices iniatives and use established relationships within Federal Government to advance Air Canada’s corporate interests.
  • Strategize and collaborate with the appropriate Director, Human Resources to implement a vision to address the findings of particular investigations and develop resolution strategies.
  • Oversee the resolution process, including the fair, thorough and prompt resolutions of notices brought forward to the HRHO by Air Canada’s employees. 
  • Responsible for conflict engagement approaches under the Workplace Harassment and Violence Prevention Policy, as well as the Corporate Policy and Guidelines on Business Conduct.
  • Liaise with branch leaders and stakeholders to identify systemic issues and develop strategies to ensure positive outcomes and mitigate reputational risk to the Company .
  • Promote and foster a harassment-free environment and encourage awareness of the HRHO and its objectives.
  • Responsible for the introduction and implementation of a branch-specific case management tool. 
  • Responsible for providing quarterly and annual statistical data to the Executive Branch, and submitting the Annual Report to the Head of Compliance and Enforcement by March 1 as required under the Workplace Harassment and Violence Prevention Regulations.
  • Oversee the planning of educational and training initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Relevant legal education and training, including a minimum of 10 years of experience in human resources, labour relations, conflict resolution, and workplace investigations.
  • Knowledge of Canadian federal legislation (Part II of the Canada Labour Code).
  • Knowledge of current trends and developments in workplace harassment and violence, their practical applications and investigation techniques.
  • Knowledge of a variety of dispute resolution techniques and their appropriate application.
  • Ability to oversee a complex, multi-issue and diverse caseload.
  • Knowledge of interview and investigation methodologies, principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of current trends and developments in investigative techniques, and their practical applications.
  • Proven experience building and leading effective and high performing teams.
  • Maintain good communication skills and build positive working relationships.
  • Expressive and persuasive in both spoken and written language in facilitating resolution and disposition of notices of occurrence of harassment and violence.
  • Able to reason through complex spoken and written information.
  • Ability to apply good judgement to complex situations to achieve effective and efficient dispute resolution.
  • Superior written skills. Can review documents and provide critical feedback.
  • Strong analytical ability.
